REFLECTIONS
Experience
In this semester, I feel like publishing design is the toughest among all the modules I'm taking. The toughest part for me would be creating layouts, which I struggled from the start from the Form & Movement exercise we did at the beginning. I think the hardest part is constantly feeling stuck and feel like I've came up with nothing after working on some of the tasks. I think the most challenging part of it would be arranging all the contents altogether while making sure that it has consistency, yet the layouts have to break the monotony at the same time, considering the amount and type of content we have.
Observation
I observed that what we've learned in publishing design actually applies on many other areas in design as well. Unlike other modules and assignments which requires to generate/create something, this module is more about assimilating all the contents texts, images, space and put everything together to present in a readable, understandable manner while enhancing the viewer's experience while reading the contexts. Besides, the use of space is also something important I've observed in this module. While determining the margin space at the beginning of this module, to be honest, I didn't really know what the purpose was and I couldn't understand what does an 'interesting' space meant by sir. After doing task 3A and observing interesting layout visual references, I finally understood what was sir referring to. Besides, throughout all the tasks, I've also learned the importance of grid system and the purpose of using it, which was something I couldn't really understand during the determining grid exercise at the beginning of the module as well.
Findings
Throughout all the exercises and tasks, I think I've learned a lot looking back at all my attempts for all the tasks which some were really terrible; I've made many senseless mistakes and wasn't able to identify the problems while doing the tasks. I actually find it really helpful receiving feedback, looking at my classmates' work and listening feedback given to them in class. There were times where I just don't feel like talking, showing my work and attending class but I'm actually glad I did. I think Mr Vinod's feedback is really constructive; he is able to identify, point out and articulate the aspects that can be improved on. I think the most valuable lesson from all the feedback is that I get to learn and identify the problems and mistakes, try coming up with solutions which I think is the first way to improve and do better next time.
