TASK 2
Content Generation
In this project, we have to create and design a book of 32 pages that are smaller than A4 but bigger than A5.
We will need to:
1. Write 3000 words (English/Malay) on any subject that we are familiar with and the text content must be divided into 3 chapters minimum, it must also have 3/4/5 subtexts (sidebars) and one pull quote per chapter.
2. Identify 16 areas in our written text for visualization, we are allowed to use any medium that is suitable, for example, illustration, photography or mix-media.
Moving on next, I started to illustrate my visuals on photoshop. However, I realized that I'm not comfortable with the illustration style and I don't really like how it turns out.
FEEDBACK
Week 2
Specific feedback: After viewing my visual reference, sir said try to come up with illustrations with different complexity because of our time constraint, he asked me to try making it more conceptual instead of drawing what the event is about
Week 3
Good attempt for coming up with 4 illustrations. I told sir that I’d like to change my approach manner in terms of the illustration style and he said I should go ahead but try making it more abstract and I don’t have to draw things that depict the actual situation in my story.
Week 4
Sir said that I seemed to be on the right the direction and the visuals look more abstract; I should proceed and complete all the visuals.
REFLECTIONS
Experience
Throughout this project, I struggled the most when I first started illustrating. The visual style that I was going for initially was not something that I am comfortable working with. Since I'm more comfortable using illustrator, I decided to change my visual style and the execution method. However, I do feel like I'm running out of time along the process and my working pace were getting slower since I've wasted quite some time working on the first few attempts that didn't work out well. Even though I did hesitate to change my visual style since I've already done 4 of the illustrations, I'm glad that I decided to change it since I was struggling too much and spending too much time figuring how to render consistently.
Observation
I observe that there are actually many ways to execute and illustrate and the use of different tool, brushes, textures would give a different feeling or style on the illustration which I think is where the beauty of art lies.
Findings
I realized that it is always important to find a suitable visual reference before coming up with illustrations as it gives a clearer direction. Besides, I find that testing out and experimenting with a am art style before deciding is also crucial to make sure that I feel comfortable to execute the illustrations out within a short period of time given.
FURTHER READING
In chapter 5 of this book, it talks about the type basic and provide a list of alphabetical listings of typefaces and specimens. I find it quite helpful as I'm able to see the all the typefaces with different type family in a long list to discover some of the typefaces that I like. Besides, in chapter it explains about the importance of working with grids. It explains about the grid systems and the way it is being used such as Typographic Unit Grids, Composite Grids, Modular Grids and Hierarchical Grids.
