Task 3B

In this assignment we are required to adapt the materials we've come up with in BCI modules and create an interactive brand guidelines PDF for on-screen reading purpose.

Week 9
First I stared off by choosing a grid system out of 3 grid systems and start working on it by testing it out.

Grid System Used First Attempt

Layout First Attempt

After my first attempt, I realised that what I have done is really terrible and have not met the requirement of the module. I decided to rework on by using another grid system and plan the navigation buttons. I then started to create a layout and putting in materials I have which are the logos and the brand's profile.

Week 10

I was feeling very stuck and something just feel off to me. I decided to come up with another grid system and start reworking on it from the start and adding the materials I have, which is the brand's profile and the logos.

Week 11

Upon receiving feedbacks from Mr Vinod, I made a few changes on the hierarchy of information and decided to rework on the layout as well by trying another grid system.

For my brand's introduction, sir mentioned that it was too predictable so I changed the layouts and I also added more information from what I've done for my BCI, I was feeling a little confused because most of the brand guidelines I see from the internet does not have that much information about the brand and all my classmates don't seem to have that much content for brand profile either. I was hesitant on whether I should include all that into my brand guidelines at first.

Week 12

After showing Ms Li Lian my layouts, she mentioned that the navigation bar is very stiff and does not really bring out the brand's concept; she suggested using my ice cream dripping element for it. She also mentioned that the navigation bar on the top seems to be a little redundant since I already have all the navigation on my table of content page. She suggested to just create a home button would be sufficient. She also mentioned that the navigation doesn't have to be so boring and just words o navigate, I can use the elements I have for my brand for the navigation button.

Since my navigation panel has changed I had to readjust my grid system a little and move all the information down. I then moved on to start working on the layout again.

Grid System Used Final

After getting my layout done, I only started to create the navigation buttons so that I can have a clearer direction. I've explored different types of button effects while making the interactive pdf.

FEEDBACK

Week 10
- The left and right page button is too far apart, it’s inconvenient for users to click. My first page looks very stiff, I don’t have to necessarily use my logo on the cover. I can show pictures of my logo application instead. For example, someone serving ice cream with my logo on it. The cover needs to be interesting and draws people to read.
- My format is incorrect I need to use 1366x768px
- For “my table of content” the placement should be the same as my first ‘hierarchy’ which is brand overview, visual guidelines and brand applications to ensure I have the consistency.
- The huge number looks good for ‘hierarchy 1’ but it’s a little confusing, it will be better if I add the ‘hierachy2’, which is the contents for it on the same page to give readers a better understanding. Besides, the placement of the word “logo” (hierarchy 2) is different which is confusing. However, I didn’t get to explain to sir that I wanted it to be at a different placement because it’s different from ‘hierarchy 1’.
- My pull quotes need to be a little bigger

Week 11
- The hierarchy 1,2,3 is still confusing, I need to add my ‘hierarchy 3’ onto the ‘hierarchy 1’ landing page. For my ‘hierarchy 3’ page I will need to state clearly on what this page is under (Brand Introduction// Brand Profile// Brand Description)
- My layouts are very predictable and I need to try coming up with something so that it won’t look repetitive.

Week 12
- The hierarchy of infos seemed to be much clearer. Sir gave me a lot of advice on how to make my brand guide more engaging. He mentioned something that really gives me a sense of realization that the guide should be explained in the way someone will need to use the guide in real life, so things like the margin space, kerning, usage of font types etc all should be shown clearly, given a guide to make the reader understand what the instructions and rules to follow when it comes to the application. This gives me a better sense of direction on what I should work on more for BCI as well
- I also have to start making it interactive
- The white space of my collateral does not serve a purpose and doesn't look good, I need to find a way to make it better.

REFLECTION

Experience
Throughout the entire project, to be honest I felt really stuck and lost most of the time. I kept working on the project but nothing just seem to come up and I was just readjusting which has wasted a lot of time; I felt like I was just using all my time inefficiently. Besides, also I felt lost because I didn't have all the materials ready yet for my BCI module. The toughest part would be there were too many public holidays and I was unable to receive feedback sometimes from Ms Li Lian, which makes the process even slower.

Observation
I observe that planning a navigation is really important when it comes to design to make the viewer understand clearly on how the flow goes which I haven't really put in too much thoughts about it at first because I was more worried about my layouts. As mentioned by sir before, it is easy to get the readers bored if everything is just static. Even though some of the buttons/ interactive elements are really subtle and not obvious especially in an interactive pdf, it actually does make a difference to the overall reading experience.

Findings
Through this project, I realized that it is important to be more decisive and sometimes it would be better to just stop working on the layouts for too long because I felt like all the time would be wasted if I just kept readjusting without a direction.

I think this project also tests us about the sensitivity with everything we've learned since semester 1 about typography, white space etc. Even though, I did realized that alignments, grid systems actually help us to have a better guide and direction for task 3A, this project once again made me realized the importance of it. Besides, I think this project also taught us to give more considerations when it comes to the reader's experience.

FURTHER READING

To be honest, I didn't really read anything these few weeks, but I do find the posts and some tips, explanations and discussions on these accounts from Instagram quite helpful.

On this post, they shared about how designing navigation system should be able to be understood and function at the same time.

These are some of the accounts I follow on an app from China, called RED. I find short clips like these easier to understand and I can just scroll and gain new knowledge and insights about design which does not consume a lot of time as well.
