FINAL PROJECT

Week 1

Choosing 3 favourite stop motion videos and explain the reason why they were chosen.

I've chosen this stop motion video because I really like the colours, frame composition and how this video conveys a message in such a subtle, abstract way.

From my understanding of this video, it's about a Chinese girl who's away from home to a foreign western country. In my point of view, the concept of the burger, pizza and pasta engulfing the main character in the video represents the fear of adapting to a new culture. When she found the 'lucky coin' in the stomach, it possibly means that no matter what her heritage and the love from her mother and her family will never leave her.

Besides, though the characters are made up of puppets, you could feel the emotions in it and the movements are so smooth that it looks animated which is why I think this stop motion video is really brilliant.

The reason why I've chosen this video is that I really like the bright pastel colours and the details in it. Since I'm always fascinated by food photography and videos, I really like the concept of using miniature cooking objects and the tools that were used in this video. Besides, the detail of the set and background created are really detailed and aesthetically pleasing to me as well.

This short stop motion video is made using papers only and it was edited in a way that it looks like a sticker book and I find it really interesting.

@twolostkids is one of my all-time favourite video content creators from Brazil. I really like their creative approach in creating videos and the way they edit videos bringing out the vintage feels.

Week 5

Topic Idea:
After going through some of the social issues that sir suggested and searching for some on my own, I've decided to choose "fast fashion" as my topic for social issues.

The reason why I chose this topic is that I feel like most people are not aware of the negative impacts of overbuying new clothes during flash sales and throws them away later on. In addition to that, I do know quite a number of people that don't "rewear" their clothes after they have posted their pictures on social media in that outfit. This has become much common for generations these days and these actions are harmful to our environment and child labours are also involved. However, "fast fashion" does not seem like a huge topic for social issues and most millennials are unaware that they are playing a part in this matter.

Research about fast fashion:

Types of stop-motion animation:
  • Doll animation
  • Object animation
My idea is to use jointed dolls that are moveable for the characters and objects to represent waste and pollution.

Week 11

Working Title: Fast Fashion
Stop Motion Type: Doll Animation
Synopsis:

In this story, the main character has a bad habit of overbuying new clothes on flash sales.

J sees the advertisements for her favourite clothing brand having flash sales and got excited. After purchasing them online and receiving her parcels, J unboxes them immediately to try her new clothes out. However, after wearing all her new clothes, she realised she’s not satisfied with all the clothes she bought, despite so many buying so many clothes during the online sales. She ended up piling up her clothes everywhere in the room and claims that she is going to get rid of them and get more new clothes.

*Buy less. Choose well. Shop rationally.*

Visual References:

The reason why I’ve chosen this video as my visual reference is that I think the style that I’m going for could be quite similar to what I’m going for. The backdrop of this video is also very similar to mine and I’ve taken some inspirations in terms of shot-style as shown in the image above for my video my backdrop is quite similar as well.

For video editing style, I’ve always wanted to edit videos to get a vintage feel. In my video, I would want to try adding a border, making it have the vintage “looking at on old screen” type of feel. However, since my video theme is quite sophisticated which is about fast fashion in the modern-day, I’m not sure is it the best thing to do. Hence, I will need to consider first.

FEEDBACKS

Week 10
Mr Martin checked on our progress and I can proceed to create more props.

Week 11
After looking at my final project storyboard, sir said that it would be better to show more boxes and clothes to add more exaggeration to my video. Besides, sir also said that it'd be better to focus on the screen on the first scene.

Week 12
Sir said that I can proceed with shooting all the drafts and compile them as my first draft and view them next week.

Week 13
Mr Martin said that it'd be better to rotate my video a little so that it will have better alignment.

Week 14
Sir said that the colours look fine and my audio sounds fine but I will need to add crossfade for my audios and add a room ambience so that it will sound better. Besides, it'd be better for me to add subtitles for the line "None of them suits me".

REFLECTIONS

I enjoyed doing this assignment quite a lot even though it is quite time-consuming. In this assignment, I was able to apply so many things we have learnt in this module, from the planning of storyboard, composition and framing, art direction, all the way to sound production which makes me realised that we have really learnt so much throughout all these weeks.

In this assignment, I struggled quite a lot because there are 2 mirrors in the set and I need to adjust the angles so that I will not be seen. I had to reshoot the scenes quite a few times because I kept moving and my reflection was seen which was quite frusfrating. Besides, the struggle that I had was the set was really cramped and my doll can't really stand stably, so I came up with an idea by using blu tacks to secure it.

Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the outcome of my final project becasue it turned out exactly how I visualised it to be when I have decided on this topic about fast fashion. I can't wait to try shooting more stop motion videos during the semester break.
