Project 2

Data Collection:

Tze Earn found the site "Lefkara" using google Earth and google street view. She was able to find some local lace shop there and did some observation on the streets and buildings in Lefkara.

Virtual Youtube Tour

Besides that, I have also found a virtual tour video from this company called DuooVision that did a 3D virtual tour of the Folk Art Museum. However, we were unable to find the exact virtual tour to visit and experience on our own.

Moreover, I've also watched some videos of youtube walkthrough of Leftkara and here are the links:

Based on the videos I've watched, I've made some observations from it.

Observation:
- Houses or buildings are clad in ‘Lefkara stone’, along with clayed tiled roofs
- The main colours observed in the villages are beige, white and brown

Besides I also notice that they have interesting geometrical motifs on window fences and doors which looks quite similar to the motifs of Lefkara lace to me.

Youtube Video Interviewees for Data Collection

I have found a few videos on youtube of some of the Cypriots sharing their knowledge and experiences on youtube and listed down some important points they've stated.

Interview through Video Conference

Besides, I stumbled upon a Facebook profile of a textile woven shop in Cyprus and I found out that that the owner of this shop, Madam Julia Astreou Christoforou, does Cyprus textiles and Leftkara lace being one of them.

Julia Astreou Christoforou
    •  Textile designer (specialising in woven textiles), artist and researcher
    •  Textiles advisor for the films "Weaving Ladies of Cyprus" (2001-2008) and "Lefkara Lace"
    • Worked at Cyprus Handicraft Service for 21 years
    • Shop owner of Julia Astreou Woven Textiles
I then sent her an email requesting an interview session with her.

Email to Madam Julia

Scheduling an interview time with Madam Julia

Madam Julia replied to my email replied on 04/02/2,
Zoom interview scheduled on 07/02/21

Before interviewing Madam Julia, I read more about her and prepared some interview questions. I tried to think of questions that are related to our research objectives and here are the questions prepared.

I then hosted an interview with Madam Julia through zoom interview on 7/2/2021 at 5p.m. Malaysia time, 11am Cyprus time.

In our interview, Madam Julia shared her experience as a textile artist and she was able to answer some questions about the Leftkara lace that we are unable to find online which were really helpful for us.

FEEDBACKS

Week 4

Mr Asrizal reminded us to be careful with our approach while coming up with a design and make sure the design application is appropriate.

Week 5

Mr Asrizal said that we did a good job for our data collections.

REFLECTIONS

While doing our data collection, everyone in the group felt such a pity that we are not able to visit places to collect data because of the pandemic. However, Tze Earn did found some virtual museums online which was a really cool experience as and I've no idea virtual museums like that existed. While I was watching youtube videos of the Leftkara village, I could feel the vibe that gives off which is such a calm and laid back village and it has a strong influence of Greek architecture in their infrastructure which is really interesting to me. After learning more about the culture there, it makes me want to visit Leftkara in Cyprus and I hope I'll be able to one day.

Also, I was surprised and felt really lucky as Madam Julia responded to the email I've sent her. This was the first time I hosted an interview meeting and it was quite nerve recking for me. But thankfully, the interview meeting went well and we had a great time listening to the experienced Madam Julia shared with us and asking some of the questions that we were unable to find online.
