Project 2A - Font Design

INSTRUCTIONS

Week 7
This week, we were briefed on the first part of Project 2, which is font design. Mr Vinod said that we have to dissect the letters in the 10 type families given. Then, we were told to come up with a new typeface design with the letters "a i m e p y t g d o b ! , .", using Adobe Illustrator and Font Lab to generate the typeface.

Mr Vinod then gave us half an hour to sketch out 5 idea sketches. At the beginning of this project, since I haven't decided my font to be serif or sans serif yet, I have decided to try sketching some serif and sans serif font ideas.

Idea sketches

After seeing my idea sketches, Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul suggested me to choose the third one as they mentioned that this font is interesting compared to the others as the o brings out the contrast.

For this font, I have chosen to use Futura Book as a reference because I like font especially the alphabets such as o.a,d,b and g.

Week 8

Sketch for all the letters required

After seeing the rough sketch, Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul said that it is not consistent, the characters especially m, e, y and t does not match the o that I'm going for.

After making some adjustments, I started to go on Illustrator to create my font. After making lines for my ascender, caps height, x-height and descended, I started off by creating my first letter, o on illustrator. Then, I continued creating all the other letters by following the guidelines that I have created.

Moving on next, I watched Mr Vinod's tutorial step by step using font lab. However, at the beginning of building the fonts, I could not have access to font lab so I tried using calligraphr.com as mentioned by Mr Vinod.

Attempting on calligraphr.com

After attempting on calligraphr.com, I noticed that it did not scan out my font accurately and it took me a long time to try smoothing and correcting it. I then decided to try using font lab on my home's pc and it finally worked.

On font lab, I started off by keying in the information of my font and adjusted the underline from -100 to -235 as mentioned in the tutorial.

Key Dimensions of Font

I named my font as 'Snake Eye' because of the shape of the letter o kind of look like a snake eye to me.

Font Information

Moving on, I went Windows > New metrics window and followed Mr Vinod's instruction by changing all the spacings to 50 for both left and right

FEEDBACK

Week 7
Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul suggested me to choose the third one as they mentioned that this font is interesting compared to the others as the o brings out the contrast.

Week 8
Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul gave us feedback for our font design, he said that the characters that I have created are not consistent.

Besides, I have also sent sir a dm asking for feedback on that week and here are the feedbacks from sir:
Relatively consistent. A there are minor parts of the m that could be curved a little smoother. The punctuations aren’t up to the mark. Please take reference to compare sizes in the example I.e. analysis universe (or any other) a, i and! ., what’s the diff, is there a diff.

Week 9
Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul said ''good work'' overall for the poster. However, Mr Vinod pointed out that my exclamation mark needs more space and the comma is still not up to size. He also stated that the letter 't' and 'y' looks slightly off.

I consulted sir for some of his feedback for my letter 't' and he suggested to move the font name to the left, which kind of look a cigarette with smoke to me.

REFLECTION

For this project, it was actually very challenging for me even though the font that I did was sans serif since I'm not really sensitive in meticulous things. Besides, I also had a hard time trying to make the letters from scratch to make them look more consistent. To be honest, I had no idea it requires so much effort to generate a typeface before this. I have also noticed that I have started to pay more attention whenever I see text around me such as magazines, advertising posters and labels etc in my daily life which is quite new to me. One of the most important things that I've learnt from this project is to really pay attention to small little details, study and 'never trust your eyes' as mentioned by Mr Vinod. For example, the letter o in most of the type families are not exactly a perfect circle even though it might appear to be like that. For the poster design, it was actually quite fun to arrange and play around with the arrangement of letters. I am actually quite happy with how it turns out like a smoke out of a cigarette at the end.
