INSTRUCTIONS
For project 2, we are required to create an artwork with the topic ''Sence of Place''. Before watching the recorded lecture, I read the module information and decided to to do some research about this topic because I was quite clueless about what to do in the beginning.
At the beginning of this project, I wanted to choose my room as my sense of place because this is the place where I feel the most relaxing, especially after a long day. However, after seeing my classmates work and presentation I realised that many of us are choosing our bedroom and workspace as our sense of place. While listening to their presentations, I realised that those who caught my attention are the ones who have chosen places with a story behind it which I find much more interesting. Hence, I decided to explore more and try something that is different from others and meaningful to me at the same time.
After some thoughts and observing around my home, I have decided to choose the kitchen as my sense of place. I noticed that most of the pictures that I normally have taken at home are in the kitchen and I realised that it's a place that is quite meaningful to me because of the time I spent with my mother.
After doing some research, I decided to try and find out the angles that I want while making sure that the compositions within the A4 size that look good to me.
Since this artwork is supposed to bring out feelings, I feel like it is important to use the medium or tools that are most suitable to bring out the effect. I think the lines that I use in the left picture looks more geometrical and tidy but it doesn't bring out the feeling of a sense of place to me. Then, I decided to try it out with a watercolour brush tool.
Final Sense Of Place Artwork:
For this artwork, I have decided to choose my home's kitchen as my sense of place. Ever since I was a kid, I spent most of my time in school and going for tuition classes. After graduating from high school, I had to live away from home to attend college and because of that, I didn't really get to spend much time at home with my mother which I honestly think is quite a pity. However, due to the pandemic this year, I was able to spend more time with my mother and most of the time we spend together is in the kitchen baking together. Because of that, I feel like this is the place I'm going to miss the most if I were to live away from home because of the memories I've had in this place.

Exploration and tryouts
After trying out with different angles, I realised that it would be more suitable and easier for me to use an isometric angle and added in the details.

Illustration Explorations:
Later on, I decided to try scanning my sketches and create some effects using photoshop. I found out that I like how my sketches turn out after adding some effects, blending modes and filter using photoshop. Since I want my artwork to bring out the feeling of warmth and nostalgic in my artwork, I tried exploring more textures and colours to see which is better.
Photoshop Explorations:
Notepaper texture
Tiny tiles texture
Lino-cut texture
After doing these explorations, I felt like it is quite empty and meaningless without showing something that is going on in the kitchen. Hence, I decided to include my mother and I baking in the kitchen.

Explanation:
The reason why I have chosen to use isometric view is that I was inspired by the idea of miniature doll house as I used to own one when I was a kid. During the feedback session, Dr Jinchi said that it reminded her of those online house makeover games which also reminds me that it used to be one of my childhood online games as well. Besides, I have chosen an isometric view is that my ambition as a kid initially was to be an interior designer. I remember the struggles I had to draw with adequate proportions and alignments which I am still really terrible at. Hence, I thought it would be a good idea to recreate something I've attempted in the past.
For this artwork, I have decided to go for a warmer colour palette which is a little different from my actual kitchen. The reason why I chose this colour tone is that I want to bring out the warm and nostalgic feels. Besides, I also added textures so that it would look like an old paper as I want to imagine my future self looking at this artwork as if it was from a long time ago while feeling the emotions at those moments.
FEEDBACK
For the first feedback session, Dr Jinchi said that the brainstorming process I did was a good way to start out the project. Besides, she said the photographs are taken and presented in a good manner.
For the second feedback session, Dr Jinchi said that my progress documentation is well documented and she asked me the reason why I have chosen to use an isometric view. However, while showing my work I got a little nervous and couldn't give her the explanation. Hence, I have added the reason in my artwork explanation.
REFLECTION
For this assignment, I think it is one of the assignments that took me the longest to complete as I had quite a hard time on the angle, alignments and medium used. I have tried to use illustrator at the beginning but it just couldn't give me the feels which I got quite frustrated after spending quite some time on it. After that, I have decided to use photoshop and it allows me to use more different tools such as blending tools to bring out different possibilities to bring out the effect and emotions. After all, I am actually quite happy with the final work and I think I've learned quite a lot throughout the explorations of this assignment.
