Week 4

Design Principles/ Bachelors of Design (Hons) in Creative Media/ Taylor's University/ Exercises 4
On this week's lecture, we learned about the topic Harmony and Unity. Ms Jinchi mentioned that Harmony and Unity is something that is almost inseparable and work hand in hand.
Lecture Notes:
Harmony
- involves the selection of elements that share a common trait.
- becomes monotony without variety*. (a change or a slight difference in elements and objects in composition, to avoid a boring composition for example using varying angles, exposure, composition, etc.)
Unity
- happens when these elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme.
After watching the lecture, I have also done some visual research to get a better understanding. I have saved some of the images so that I am able to refer to it later on:
“The essence of the beautiful is unity in variety.” – William Somerset Maugham
Fernando Botero, The Musicians, 1991
After seeing many examples of art pieces that involves harmony and unity, I find this artwork really interesting, in this painting the artist creates unity in The Musicians with form, shape, color, line, and space which looks pleasing and complete to me.
''Principles of art unity is not necessarily just a repetition of the same element over and over again, but it is the pleasing combination of elements to create the big picture.''
Examples of Unity in Art Using Shape/Form:
Gustav Klimt, The Kiss, 1907–08
Piet Mondrian, Broadway Boogie Woogie, 1942
Gustave Caillebotte, Fruit Displayed on a Stand, 1881
Examples of Unity in Art Using Color:
Johannes Vermeer, The Art of Painting, 1665-68
Examples of Unity in Art Using Texture:
Claude Monet, Rue Montorgueil in Paris, 1878
Paul klee, Ad Parnassum, 1932
Examples of Unity in Art Using Line:
Besides, I have also visited some websites to study more about Harmony and Unity

Ideas and Explorations:
Final Artwork:
Harmony
For this artwork, I got inspired by seeing many objects with unique shapes on Instagram and Pinterest. I decided to try using shapes to express the topic, harmony. For my final artwork, I have used canvas paper and made a collage so that it is easier for me to arrange the composition and paint.
Unity
For my artwork for unity, I have decided to create a bit more texture and trying out different painting method. Also, I have tried using cotton buds for the swirling part and palette knife for the tree bark to create the texture. The purple part inside the tree trunk was inspired by looking at amethyst crystals mountains.
FEEDBACK
For this week's feedback, Ms said that she like my first idea sketches for unity and top right idea sketches for harmony. However, for harmony, I personally like my idea of expressing harmony through shapes and decided to do it instead.
OVERALL FEEDBACK
Exercise 4: It is good to know that you use other tools to manipulate the acrylic used for unity exercise. The final design is well represented. For harmony, the overall show harmony in shapes. Although there are differences in colours, they blend together quite successfully.
REFLECTION
For this week's exercise, I think I enjoyed the most out of all the exercises we had because I like to paint. I also enjoyed creating layers and texture and exploring painting methods to bring out a certain effect through this exercise while doing explorations. After weeks of design principle classes we had, I think I am able to understand the design principles better and able to see what are the principles that can be seen in a painting or an artwork.
