Week 2

Introduction to UX Design: Bad vs Good UX

The key takeaway from our lecture this week:

Good design is often overlooked because it seamlessly integrates into our daily lives, whereas poor design stands out due to its flaws and inconveniences.

Example showed in class: Norman Doors and mobile application

According to Donald Norman, good design is more difficult to notice than bad design. One example of poor design is evident in doors known as "Norman Doors," which confuse users by not reflecting their intended usage. If a door has a flat panel, it should be pushed, but when it's the opposite, it indicates a poorly designed door.

Another example of good UX design is found in mobile apps that utilize descriptive icons instead of text. Icons save screen space and are visually appealing, while also overcoming language barriers, allowing users to interact with the app effortlessly. In UX design, the user's needs and preferences are paramount.

Conclusion on what I've learned during this lecture:

To create a good user experience, a product should possess certain characteristics. Firstly, it should be usable, meaning its design, structure, and purpose are clear to the user. Users should be able to understand how to perform actions and comprehend the meaning of controls and settings. Secondly, a product should be equitable, ensuring that users with diverse backgrounds and abilities can access and enjoy it. Equity focuses on providing resources based on different needs rather than simply providing equal resources to all. Thirdly, an enjoyable product design cultivates a positive relationship with the user, fostering happiness and satisfaction. Lastly, a product should be useful, effectively solving a user problem. Usability pertains to ease of use, while usefulness refers to the product's ability to address user needs.

TASKS

We were divided into 4 groups for discussions for our TASK 1 for UX design module. Ms randomly divided us and I was in the same group with Britney. Shayor and Imran; our topic was about transportation. After discussion, we decided to choose Taylor's Shuttle Bus as our topic.

Week 3

This week's lecture was conducted online. We were given individual task for this week:

FEEDBACK

Ms said that our presentation was good, we are able to identify the pros and cons of our bus scheduling system. We also provided suggestions in our presentation as well.

REFLECTION

Experiences:
In this module, I get to know more about UX. Since my specialisation is not in UI/UX the lecture was actually quite new and interesting to me.

Observation:
I observe that a good UX design have to function well, not only for aesthetic purpose. The keywords that I learned that are important in UX design is usable, equitable, enjoyable and usable, which I will keep in mind while coming up designs.

Findings:
I realised that a good UX design is not only about bringing an idea you think will solve someone's problem to life, but also to really understand the pain points, by doing research and user testing.
