Task 1

LECTURE

Since I'm not familiar with what we have to do for empathy map empathy map, I went to on the link and found a video about empathy mapping. It is used to understand user's behavior and the visualize the possibilities of reactions, problems. It is important because it helps us to stand in their shoes, so that we can come up with solutions to tackle the problem we are trying to solve.

RESEARCH

Week 1
At the start of our research stage, the first thing we started off is through their social media platform, EZplast to get a better understanding of what they have done and what are they doing now.

Moving on next we start to think of what are the questions we can come up with to really understand what is problem that we are solving.

I started off by using a doc to list down my thoughts and shared the link to the group.

Rough Draft

Week 2

After coming up the questions, we interviewed Ms Zazila. Since she had a sudden delay for the meeting, Fazal and Yumnuu are not able to attend.

I am in charge of hosting the meeting and ask questions, while Jon and Je Yann helps to record and jot down what has been said into text.

At first, she told us that she wants us to reach out to more people on social media for her organization and she would like to brand her plastic wood furniture shop, but later on she told us that she wants to focus on the household areas, we then shifted our focus on the target audience and the possible solutions.

Week 3
This week we came up with a list of questions we want to ask, I scheduled the meeting with Ms Zazila but she did not ended up attending the meeting due to an emergency. So the questions we have are yet to be answered.

PROCESS

Week 2
All of us are quite confused who are we supposed to empathize with for the empathy map, we started off by empathizing EZplast, we make us of the empathy map procedure to help us to come up with questions to understand the enterprise better.

Week 4
This is the week of our presentation and yet we were still feeling like we're behind of everything because Ms Zazila's situation. I consulted Ms Lilian's feedback and we decided to just focus on people who are in Kota Kinabalu, which include Kepayan that Zazila mentioned as well.

Fazal and Jon messaged me and ask me what are we supposed to do since we are quite lost at first for our presentation. I proposed a presentation flow to our group mates which started off with an intro for EZplast, Findings, Empathy Map, Personas, Problem Statement then lastly Solution Suggestion.

For the empathy map, Fazal and Jon also made an effort to create some personas but I pointed out that the personas they creating does not sound realistic and seems like we are trying to "match" the personas behavior to what we want them to, but not truly understand them.

Personas Done by Jon & Fazal

Since Fazal and Jon are struggling with it and we did not have much time left, we decided to just focus on two audience in general (one who has already been practising recycling but not with EzPlast, the other who does not have the practice to recycle )

We had our discussions mostly on discord and miro board:

FEEDBACK
Week 2
Ms said that she sees that what Ms Zazila said has the coherence between her organization, the plastic wood furniture and turning the profits into funds for the medical fees for under privledge children.

Week 3
Ms Lilian mentioned that we need to work faster since it's already week 3, she asked us to study the demographics and see whether if which way is more appropriate to reach out to our target audience.

* Empathy map is on your targeted audience. Still ppl who need to be aware that there is this programme that lets them donate their plastic for recycling. Target audience remains the same but ideation approach can be for two separate demographic. You may suggest both ideas to gage, nothing is set in stone at this moment, it still need to be ideated, evolve and be refined.*

Week 4
Ms Lilian commented that our presentation was able to show good understanding about our enterprise, look through the comment and understanding the audience was also a good research done. However we will still need to confirm with Zazila the information because she got disconnected half way during the presentation. We also need to ask if whether or not she would want the physical solution as it also requires cost as well.

NEXT COURSE OF ACTION

Week 2
Coming up with questions and meeting Zazila to have a clearer understanding of what she really wants:
Promote her organization? Plastic Wood Furniture branding? Why? How? Who? Where?

Week 3
Coming up with questions to confirm audience and interview Ms Zazila again, brainstorm possible solution we can provide, redo empathy map on target audience, coming up with problem statement, dividing parts, prepare presentation slides.

Week 4
Reconfirming presentation information with Ms Zazila, reschedule and conduct meeting with her.

SUBMISSION

REFLECTION

Experience:

This task was honestly quite challenging. I think the design thinking process is not easy because there are so many things to think of. It's hard to start the empathize stage because it seems like Ms Zazila tells us she wants and need so many things and we are struggling to find a direction. At one point all of us are really lost and didn't know where to begin with. I'm glad that all of us are cooperative and taking the initiative to contribute.

Observation:
I observed that coming up with questions is a very important stage and it definitely requires a lot of critical thinking, especially when you're asking someone who seems to not have a clearer view of what they really want or expect.

Besides, I also observe that having the sensitivity to think in other's perspective is important but not everyone can get the sense of it. Fazal and Jon have been trying to help but I can see that they are struggling and sometimes I have to point out things that I think won't work; they said that this is something entertainment design student don't usually do and they find it really hard to understand sometimes. Meanwhile, Yumnnu on the other hand have better sensitivity to this because her specialization is more user-centered.

Findings:
I realized that the empathy stage, defining problem statement is important to give us a clearer direction on how our design/ solution going to be about even though it's quite tedious, otherwise we could be coming up many solutions but that might not be the best ones to tackle and solve the problem; critical thinking is important.
