PROJECT 1
For this project, we are required to come up with a Happy Meal packaging design for kids. I've decided to choose cute little monsters. I was inspired by looking at the cartoons that my little cousins love to watch. I realized that kids tend to like creatures like this which have shapes that are interesting and illustrated in a flat/ simple manner.
I decided to go on Pinterest to look for some visual references:
At the beginning, I wanted my message of my packaging to be bright and an outdoor-themed since during the pandemic, these kids are not advisable to go out, so I thought that a theme like this would be nice for them to at least get the feelings of being outdoor. I did a few sketches to develop the look of the little monsters that I would like to go for.
Later on, I decided to change the 'outdoor' themed message to a 'staying together at home theme' instead. I was actually inspired after watching a Buzzfeed video on Instagram, seeing a four year old kid was crying during her online class and her father was trying to console her.
This gave me a realization that this pandemic not only affected grown ups but also children as well; I just thought that it must be hard to be stuck at home and even attending online classes at such young ages. Hence, I thought that it would be nice if these kids can also feel that these little monsters are also staying at home and they are not alone in this journey. Besides, instead of including educational information on the packaging, I had an idea to come up with a stay home bucket list for the kids to have fun.
After sketching out all my ideas, I had a clearer direction on the concept that I'm going for and decided to digitize my ideas out and start illustrating.
I decided to make all the characters into 'one-eyed' because I find it to be more memorable and have more contrast. Aside from that, through my personal observation, I observe that kids tend to like creatures that are peculiar and in a flat, simple form, which was the reason why I have decided to go for this style for my Happy Meal packaging design.

FEEDBACKS
Week 6
I'm not feeling well these weeks so I couldn't show ms my progress, I messaged her personally and updated her about my ideas for this project.
REFLECTION
Experience:
Throughout this project, I would say I enjoyed the process a lot; I even bought a happy meal for my own to study the die line of the box which is pretty fun.
Observation:
I observed that in many happy meal packaging that are memorable and unique, it doesn't need to be too complicated sometimes which I was a hesitant whether my design would be too simple. But through all the visual research, I observe that the one that stands out usually have quite a simple a design, yet their graphics are interesting and eye captivating. Lastly, the use of colour is also one of the important factors as these designs are meant to target kids.
Findings:
I realised that when it comes to project like this, a core message or a theme is important so that all the other aspects can revolve around it. Otherwise, if there isn't a theme it would be hard to find a direction to pursue. Even though this design is meant for kid and they might not get the rationale behind all the design thoughts I think it's important to still communicate visually and state simple message to deliver the core message of the design.
