LECTURE AND TUTORIAL

Week 1

On the first week of class, Ms Zettie welcomed us and she started off by letting us know what are the upcoming projects to be expected and the timeline of these projects. She then talked about the importance of packaging and how it affects the choices of consumers, catching their attentions while purchasing an item. Besides, she also showed us some videos of interesting packaging design in class.

Moving on next, she briefed us about our exercise 1 which is a case study of packaging design.

Week 2

This week, we learned more in detail about what packaging is and why is it important. In this lecture,

Some of the key take-aways from this lecture are:
Simplicity, quick and easy understood information, clear product label, honesty and authenticity are some of the crucial points to make a good packaging design. Besides, the materials and the ergonomics are also some of the important points that should not be overlooked while designing a packaging

Extensibility:

  • Easy introduction of a new line extension
  • Creates unity
  • Allows product variation (eg. sub brand)

EXERCISE

Exercise 1

The aim of this exercise is to study on an existing product packaging by dissecting the design details, identify the advantages and disadvantages of the design elements and materials and to explore the whole process of the overall design and how the packaging carries the brand image.

I have decided to choose this packaging since it contains more information and the complexity makes it more interesting to study.

Besides, I have also done some background studies of the brand to have a better understanding of the brand image and the image they are portraying to their customers.

FEEDBACKS

Week 2

Ms Zettie suggested me to talk about the packaging design of the individual sachets and take picture of the die cut of the box.

REFLECTIONS

Experience:
In exercise 1, at the beginning I was quite lost because I couldn't really find a packaging that has more complexity so there is not much to study and discuss about. Upon finding a packaging which has more information and complexity, I was then able to observe and state down the points that I've observed.

Observation:
I observed that the executions of visual elements plays an important part which could affect the overall feels of the packaging, contributing to changing or shaping a brand's image.

Findings:
Doing this exercise made me realized that the thinking behind each packaging needs to be well planned and thought of since the ergonomics and the practicality is crucial in designing a packaging.
