Research and Insight of Art Direction

In the first exercise for this art direction module, we are required to conduct research and insight of Art Direction and leadership within a broad range of creative area. We are required to do a research regrading these topics which revolves around Art Direction:

● Art director vs Artist differences
● How does art direction value in every creative discipline (entertainment, new media and graphic design)?
●  Roles and responsibilities

In this art direction module, we are required to get into group of 3-4 members, I've teamed up with Man Ling and Ivy for this module. After our discussions and research, we have listed some of the important points on Miro Board.

In this module, the art direction we are going to be analyzing and improvising will be the game among us. Hence, we are required to do an analysis regarding good and bad art direction of the game. 


Good & Bad Art Direction

 At the beginning of the exercise, we teamed up with group 1 to test out the game and just to have fun with our classmates. While playing the game, we are also have to observe and identify the good and bad art direction while playing the game as well.

Moving on next, we then separated and went back to our own individual group voice chatroom on discord to discuss and state the some of the points and our analysis on Miro Board.

Defining Our Style

Since we are required to come up with a new version of among us, we had a lecture about defining styles. We then dive in deeper to observe the art style of the original version of among us.

Discussion on Miro Board:

Next, we moved on to discuss about the concept and theme we would like to go for, since we were quite lost at the beginning, I suggested each of us propose one theme we have in mind.

After our discussion, we decided to go for Man Ling's idea which is a pirate version of among us. We then moved on to find some visual references about pirates.


After doing our visual research, we then categorize them and define the style for their characters and landscapes:




Moving on next, we then decided to start off with the style of our character design. All of came to an agreement to create characters that are cute, yet have a little spookiness in it. We decided to turn our characters into animal character, cats for the pirates; turning them into pirate cats.

Task Distribution

After discussion, each of us take up different roles to start off this project.

  • Man Ling will be in charge of creating the sketches for character and environment
  • Ivy will be the one illustrating them and creating buttons and widgets design
  • I will be the one to arrange all the placements & compositions for the components the have come up with, anything that includes typography, creating the landing page and making all the visuals look coherent by refining them.

FEEDBACK

Good & Bad Art Direction Presentation: 
Ms Anis mentioned that our group is able to utilize the knowledge we have in our specialization to analyze the art direction which is a good thing.

Proposal Presentation:
Ms Anis approved our pirate concept and found the characters of the pirate cats interesting as well.

Final Art Direction Presentation:
Ms Anis commented that our art direction are clear and we manage to execute out pirate concept well for the new version of among us.


REFLECTIONS

At the beginning of this module, it's actually quite daunting for me to come up with a new art direction for a game design. Since I don't really play games, I didn't even have the experience in all the knowledge about stuff like this which really makes me worried at the beginning. Besides, coming from a graphic design specialization, this project is really one of the most challenging one for me to kick start. Since, my other group members are from the animation specialization, none of us are really have much experience in this as well. Even though I myself is not that confident, I took up the role as a group leader since everyone was quite lost at the beginning, I tried to keep proposing suggestions and figure out a direction together; thankfully we just somehow able to work thing out.

I would like to express my gratitude for both my team members, Man Ling and Ivy Beh for being such responsible and supportive team mates all along the project. They were participating actively throughout the entire project and constantly giving ideas and suggestions as well and I think we worked quite well together as a team despite all of us are not that confident in this module.
