Task 3/ Final project: Type Exploration and Application
INSTRUCTIONS
Final Project
For our final project, we are required to:
Develop a font that is intended to solve a larger problem or meant to be part of a solution in the area of your interest be it graphic design, animation, new media or entertainment design or any other related area not necessarily reflecting your specialisation.
or
Explore the use of a typeface in your area of interest, understand its existing relationship, identify areas that could be improved upon, explore possible solutions or combinations that may add
value to the existing typeface.
The end outcome could be
- a designed font and its application in the form
- a format that it is intending to provide a solution for,
- an exploratory process that solves a problem or adds value to existing usage.
The work can manifest into any kind of format related to the issue being solved or explored.
Week 10
Figure 1.0 Final Project Proposal
After my proposal was approved by Mr Vinod, I started off to test design my letterforms. I did my sketches on paper, then traced them with sugar paper and put them on a plastic sheet so that I can pipe out the dough by following the lines.
Exploration Part 1
Creating letterforms by using the piping dough method:

After looking at all the outcomes of my cookies, I find the outcomes using the piping method not consistent enough for the strokes and forms of certain letters. Besides, the cookies are very brittle so I was unable to take pictures of the letters individually.

Exploration Part 2
Creating letterforms by using the cutting dough method:
I first started off by designing the letterforms and sketch them down on paper.

I then realised the letterforms that I've designed is inconsistent for certain letters. Besides, the thin strokes will become a problem for me to cut the dough out later. Hence, I came up with another sketch by thickening the stroke.

After tracing the letterforms, I've placed the sugar paper into a plastic sheet and use it as a guide for me to follow while cutting the dough out.

Type Application: Cookie Branding (Key Artwork & Collateral)
Figure 3.1 Key artwork before feedback
After getting feedback, saying that the supporting elements are too overwhelming, my solution to this problem is to reduce the thickness of the brown stroke to make the wording stand out more.

FEEDBACKS
Week 10
Mr Vinod approved my proposal
Week 11
I showed sir my progress and sir said suggested to proceed to the cutting method to see whether it works better.
Week 12
Sir suggested that using the cookies letterform to come up with a cookie branding.
Week 13
Mr Vinod commented that the letters in my key artwork are too small because the other elements of the key artwork are overwhelming the fonts, I just need to fix it by making it more visible. He said that it's good that I came up with a design for the packaging with illustrations but the word "eat, play, learn" could be placed better because it is too small, but due to time constraints he will leave the decision up to me to redesign the packaging design or not.
Week 14
REFLECTIONS
In this assignment, I enjoyed exploring and executing out the designed letterforms into cookies, using the cookies to come up with a key artwork and doing a colateral branding for the cookies I've baked. Even though it is very time consuming and I would say great attention and I have to be very careful in every step of making each of the letterforms, but I am actually glad that I don't have to see so many screens while doing this assignment.
While doing the key artwork, I struggled a lot because I had to edit the colours of the cookies, masking the letters out in photoshop, which takes up quite a long time. My biggest struggle was to make the cookies letterforms to be implemented in the packaging design. I've tried coming up with many designs but it just did not work out well which was frustrating to me. But overall, even though the packaging design could be better, I'm quite satisfied with the work I've done, given that the time constraints and balancing with other modules.
