Question Guidelines and Materials:
- Who is the intended audience?
- What is the author's purpose? To survey and summarize research on a topic? To present an argument that builds on past research? To refute another writer's argument?
- Does the author define important terms?
- Is the information in the article fact or opinion? (Facts can be verified, while opinions arise from interpretations of facts.)
- Does the information seem well-researched or is it unsupported?
- What are the author's central arguments or conclusions?
- Are they clearly stated? Are they supported by evidence and analysis?
- If the article reports on an experiment or study, does the author clearly outline the methodology and the expected result?
- Is the article lacking information or argumentation that you expected to find?
- Is the article organized logically and easy to follow?
- Does the writer's style suit the intended audience? Is the style stilted or unnecessarily complicated?
- Is the author's language objective or charged with emotion and bias?
- If illustrations or charts are used, are they effective in presenting information?
FEEDBACK
Week 5
Dr Jinchi said 4 of my research articles are relevant and good to go. She suggested changing my fifth research article as the topic of colour has already been covered in one of the four articles I've picked out.
Week 6
Dr Jinchi read through 2 of my critical reviews and gave me some suggestions to refine my statements to clarify my points of view towards these articles. For my second critical review, she suggested giving some examples for the methodology to support my statement. Other than that, the points that I've written are pretty clear.
Week 7
Dr Jinchi went through my third critical review and she commented that my summary is too short. She also reminded me to critic the research design for the second approach and state the hypotheses made and some examples to support my statement.
- The articles I’ve chosen are relevant to my research
- My critical reviews are detailed and well written
- The way I convey my evaluation is objective
- Clear explanation with justification
REFLECTION
In assignment 2, since we are required to choose articles and write critical reviews, I am able to learn to identify what are the articles that would be relevant to my research, identify the strengths and weaknesses of research articles. I think this assignment is helpful because by giving critiques to the problem in the research articles, I was able to identify ways to improve research by giving justifications and it also reminds me not to repeat the same mistakes that have been done by these researchers while designing my research in assignment 3.
