Project 2B - Expression, Hierarchy & Composition

INSTRUCTIONS

Week 10
At the beginning of the exercise, I started off by going on Pinterest to do some research and get some ideas.

Visual Research on Expression, Hierarchy and Composition:

After some thinking process for the headline, I have decided to choose 2 to work on which is' Feeling lost is the process of self-discovery' and 'Insight: A quality seriously lacking in today's society.

Idea Sketches

After receiving the feedback and suggestions from Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul, I began to digitize my idea using photoshop.

Week 11
After the feedback session, I have tried to redo and I have tried using a picture of a maze just to guide me and give me a direction on the formation of the maze with words. Since most of the words that I found are not really quite related to self-discovery. I have changed my headline to '' Feeling lost is part of the learning process.''

After arranging the maze with words, I then added in a tiny human which is looking lost in it.

First attempt on GIF animation

Later on, I realised that the human figure looks a bit too huge to me and the timing of the hand scratching his head and the question mark seemed off to me.

Second attempt on poster after feedback

Second attempt on GIF animation

I decided to make the human figure slightly smaller and changing the timing of the GIF animation.

Third attempt on GIF animation

Since the feedback I got was too subtle and underwhelming, I have decided to animate more to express the word 'lost' better. I started off by having the idea of making the maze disappear. However, I realised that it didn't really make sense as the maze is supposed to make people feel lost in it.

Forth attempt on GIF animation

Then, I have decided to animate the maze to make it appear gradually.

Final GIF animation

Since the feedback I got was that the animation is a little slow, I have decided to speed up slightly and also added the question mark to show that the tiny human is lost and confused. Besides, I have also changed the timing for each letters including the spaces at the last sentence so that it will look smoother.

FEEDBACK

Week 10

Mr Shamsul and Mr Vinod saw my sketches and said that it's a good idea to use a maze to represent 'lost' and suggested me to work on this headline. They also suggested making the words 'feeling lost' big and the tiny human is lost in those words.

Week 11

Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul said that my second poster with the maze looks better and I should develop on this idea. He said that the word ‘lost’ is too redundant and suggested that I changed the words to different synonyms or words and make them smaller.

Week 12

Mr Shamsul said that my animation is too subtle while Mr Vinod said it's very underwhelming, he added that more stuff could be animated.
I sent a message to Mr Vinod asking for his feedback on the animation and he said that it looks better but the timing is too slow.

REFLECTION

Throughout this project, it was actually pretty challenging for me, especially on the GIF animation part. In the beginning, I only animated the human in the maze and I got feedback about it being too underwhelming so I struggled with how I can animate it to make it more expressive. After deciding how to animate my poster, I really struggled with the timing adjustments as I need to set different timings in order to make the maze to form around the human gradually which takes up a long time and was quite hard for me. However, I personally like the second GIF animation I attempted despite the feedback given.
