LECTURE

On our third lecture, we learned about the topic repetition and movement.

Important notes:

Repetition:
- makes a work of design seem active, it creates rhythm and pattern
- variety is essential to keep rhythms exciting and active and to avoid monotony.
- it doesn't have to be rigid for example, exactly the same sizes or directions

Movement:
- leads the eye in, around, and through a composition
- the path the eye follows
- motion or movement in a visual image occurs when objects seem to be moving in a visual image.
- comes from the kinds of shapes, forms, lines, and curves that are used.

Hierarchy:
- the choreography of content in composition to communicate information and convey meaning
- directs viewers to the most important information first, and identifies navigation through secondary content.

Alignment:
- placement of elements in a way that edges line up along common rows or columns, or their bodies along a common centre.
- creates a sense of unity and cohesion, which contributes to the design's overall aesthetic and perceived stability
- a powerful means of leading a person through a design.

Visual Research Images:

After doing some visual research, I realised that most of the pictures that I have chosen are very abstract and displayed both of the principles we learned this week, which is repetition and movement.

EXERCISES

Idea Sketches and Explorations:

For this week, I have decided to do abstract for both of my artwork that includes both principles.

Final Artwork

Repetition:

For this artwork, I got this idea while doing random strokes while doing my explorations. I find it satisfying to draw lines and pressing down my paint brush repetitively to create the lines and strokes. Turns out I'm actually quite satisfied with the results and decided to make this as my final artwork for 'repetition'.

Movement:

For this artwork for 'movement', the concept behind this abstract work is actually a fetus surrounded by amniotic fluid in a womb. The movement that I intended to create is like an enclosed and surrounded movement. After Ms Jinchi's feedback, I have made the yellow line slightly visible to show the direction of flow. However, I didn't want to make the yellow colour to stand out too much so that the colour palette of this artwork still remains the same.

FEEDBACK

For the first feedback, Ms Jinchi said that she likes my idea exploration and she said that it is a good practice to always document our work so I included my explorations and some ideas that didn't work out in my blog as well. For my final artwork for movement, ms said that she sees a stronger sense of repetition in the artwork. She suggested making the lines slightly visible to show the direction of the movement.

OVERALL FEEDBACK

Exercise 3: You have made good use of the material, watercolour, to express both principles of repetition and movement. Particularly for movement, the overall composition reflects the principle well.

REFLECTION

For this week's topic repetition and movement, I actually had fun with the materials we are required to use which is watercolour and pastels. I realised that these materials actually do have connections with the principle 'movement'. Seeing how the brush strokes going and colours flowing, spreading are actually pretty satisfying for me for some reason.
